I will forever live in two worlds. One of those worlds is filled with books which have been my primary inspiration for living. Books have always been my sacred retreat. As a child I would sit in the windowsill for hours, escaping into a world filled with vibrant imaginative characters. I’ve been a resident of Morrison’s Beloved, sang in the cage with Maya, sought freedom alongside Davis, viewed through the pain-filled eyes of Kogawa, laughed heartily with Hughes, cried deeply with Frank and Haley, became undone with Lamb and discovered nature’s beauty through Jewel. It’s a rewarding world that all children must be given. I am reminded of the quote by Malala Yousafzai that “One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world. Let this message be our legacy to future generations.
